Dr. Anthony Orr
Superintendent of Powell County Schools
An educator for more than 25 years, Dr. Orr started as a chemistry and physics teacher working in public and private schools outside of Houston and San Antonio, Texas before moving to Kentucky. After a year working for Habitat for Humanity International, Anthony reentered the education field at Dunbar High School in Fayette County as a teacher, director of a math, science, and technology program, and assistant principal before becoming head principal.
After seven years as head principal at Dunbar, Dr. Orr served as superintendent in the Nelson County Schools for seven years. In Nelson County he led student achievement growth by raising expectations, expanding the use of technology in schools, and building leadership capacity throughout the district. As a result, the district became a model in the use of instructional technology, school culture, energy efficiency, and community collaboration with visits from school leaders from around the state.
Dr. Orr and his wife of 23 years, Kara, have three children – Kenna, 8; Blake, 14; and Madeline, 18. Kara Orr is a former elementary school teacher who is now a full-time stay-at-home mom.
Dr. Orr grew up in Dyer County, TN, and went on to attend Oral Roberts University (’87-’91), where he earned his undergraduate degree. He graduated magna cum laude in science and secondary education and was a top 10 graduate from the School of Education. Dr. Orr earned his Masters in Education degree at Eastern Kentucky University (’01-’02), and a Doctorate in Education from Northern Kentucky University (‘15).
