Nutrition Services
As students return to school this fall, they will find even more healthy new choices in their school cafeterias. The school nutrition staff will be serving school meals that meet tough new federal nutrition standards set forth by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Now is a great time to encourage your kids to choose school lunch! The Powell County Schools Nutrition Services is dedicated to providing nutritious, healthy meals to the children of Powell County. We strive to plan our menus to best meet the needs and wants of the children. In doing so, we must follow state guidelines for both breakfast and lunch. Starting in the 2012-2013 school year, school lunches will be required to meet the following standards: Age appropriate calorie limits, larger servings of fruits/vegetables (students required to take a fruit/vegetable on tray), wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange and beans, fat free or 1% milk, more whole grains, Grain minimum/maximum requirement per week, less sodium, meat minumun/maximum requirement per week. Student success starts with breakfast! The Household Free and Reduced Applications are available at the School Nutrition Office or at your school cafeteria. The School Nutrition Program in Powell County wants to be an advocate for the total educational process. We believe that the positive link between nutrition and learning is well documented and undeniable. We welcome your input for this program and pledge our support within the restrictions of federal and state laws.
